What makes a good enquiry

• Photographs of the whole object, then close-ups of any marks, signatures or labels. A hallmark shot in focus is worth more than ten general views.
• Rough measurements, and the weight for anything silver or gold.
• Whatever you know about where it came from. A receipt, an old insurance valuation or a family story all narrow the date.
• Damage and repairs, said plainly. A valuer who spots a restored foot at the saleroom revises the figure anyway.
